Most employees can pay their premiums and their spouse's premiums through payroll deduction. Moreover, academic employees who are paid on a nine-month basis can apply their premiums at that same frequency. However, since this coverage is portable, it is not administered through the same computer system used for other employee benefits.

As a result, payroll deduction is not available to all employees, but only to the state's Central Payroll system and Independent Billing Units that have chosen to establish separate interfaces with the insurer. Employees who are not able to do payroll deduction can opt for quarterly, semi-annual or annual direct bill, or monthly automatic bank draft.
